Honduras
When you look at a map of Honduras, you cannot see all the history, trials and tribulations of this Central American country. Your Honduras map would just show the cities and town as well as major landmarks and its capital Tegucigalpa. Those Honduras maps would not show the poor economy that has plagued this country either. That is why tourism is such a big deal in Honduras and is in fact one of the largest boosts to the slowly growing economy. Even the flag of Honduras reveals the country’s underlying personality – simple and humble. The Honduras flag is a simple three horizontal stripes – blue, white and blue. Within the middle of the white stripe are five blue stars. Because tourism is such a large part of the economy, you will find a number of Honduras resorts in this country. Some of them are all-inclusive while others are not. One thing is for sure though; they will offer some of the best activities there are to partake of in Honduras. For instance, Coral Bay in Honduras is one of the most popular resorts around. They offer a number of activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, boating, deep sea fishing and even hiking to some of the most beautiful spots like waterfalls.
Roatan, Honduras is another popular destination. It is actually the largest of the islands in the Bay of Honduras. It boasts the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean. This place is popular with scuba divers and snorkeling. This island is large enough to boast its own airport too.
Honduras culture is strong in the country. Spanish is the official language there and family is very important to the people. In regards to religion, most residents of the country are Catholic although Evangelism is slowly growing. Honduras food is very filling, yet simple. Tortillas are a main staple food in Honduras and are often filled with a variety of ingredients to make different meals. Frijoles or beans are popular and are often mixed with other things. On the coast, the diet includes more seafood than the meals in the interior of the country. Christmas in Honduras is also a large part of their culture, even though many of the people are poor. Many of them gather with friends and family on Christmas Eve and share a meal. Part of the Honduras Christmas tradition includes trading gifts at midnight as Christmas Eve turns into early Christmas morning. Some people even put up Christmas trees and lights. All in all, tourism drives the Honduran economy. Slowly, because of the tourist trade, the unemployment rate is dropping and more people are able to earn a living. The beauty and nature of this Central American country are two of the things that are helping Honduras and its people.
