Jamaica
Jamaica is an island that is part of the Greater Antilles which is comprised of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. When you look for a map of Jamaica, you will see that it is in close proximity with these other countries listed above and is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. A Jamaican map may also reveal the different rivers and ports on the island as well as airports and even coves and bays. The history of Jamaica dates back to Christopher Columbus who claimed the island for Spain. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, the island was a major player in the sugar industry and a lot of slave labor was imported. In the 19th century, slaves outnumbered citizens by a far margin and eventually gained their freedom. A lot of Jamaican culture reflected the heritage of these slaves of years past. The Jamaican flag is comprised of three colors: green, black and gold. The gold color forms a large “X” on the Jamaica flag with four triangles in each angle. The top and bottom triangles are green and the left and right triangles are black. The island country’s motto is, “out of many, one people.” This likely reflects is slavery background.
Tourism plays a large part in Jamaica’s economy.
